‘Northern Ireland Young Cook of the Year’ Competition 2017

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Grace Dugan, Year Eight, who was recently selected to participate in the final of the highly esteemed ‘Northern Ireland Young Cook of the Year’ Competition 2017, sponsored by the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland.

Grace was informed about the competition through school and qualified for the final of the event, held at Ballyclare Secondary School on Tuesday 25th April, as a regional winner of the Key Stage 3 category, representing Belfast after impressing the judges with her proposed menu, which included Sheperdess pie with dulse buttered savoy and rope bridge garnish, as well as ingredients and methods.

The dish, served on a slate along with stacked hexagonal slate coasters to give the appearance of the Giant’s Causeway, was deliberately chosen to have a Northern Irish theme as it was to be served to foreign delegates. In addition to the pie, Grace’s imaginative dish also featured spiralised courgette, wrapped around asparagus spears, sloping from the pie in order to create a rope bridge effect.

Although Grace did not win the final of the competition the entire event was a hugely beneficial, enjoyable experience for her – the standard of cooking on the day was, as you would expect, of the highest standard and Grace is to be lauded for more than holding her own amongst such esteemed company.

Very well done to Grace on making it so far in such a keenly contested event, as well as her Home Economics teacher Mrs Caulfield who accompanied her on the day, providing support and encouragement throughout: as a Year Eight pupil Grace will have two more years to compete within the Key Stage 3 category and hopefully during this time she will succeed in going one step further and attaining the ultimate accolade in this highly renowned contest.

We look forward to hopefully sampling some of Grace’s succulent, sumptuous dishes in the near future!
