Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme

Congratulations to Deputy Head Girl Catherine Hearst who was recognised for her work as part of the Nuffield Science Bursary Scheme on the evening of Tuesday 11th September.

The Bursary, which pupils entering Upper 6th undertake during their summer holidays, saw Catherine work in the Microbiology Department at the ‘Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute’ (AFBI) on Newforge Lane.

Catherine’s project was entitled “An Investigation into the effect of various plant extracts on sudden Oak Death and related Phytophthora species’, which involved assaying different plant compounds, such as garlic and elderberry, against the Phytophthora species to test for any inhibition: if a natural compound was successful then the amount of artificial fungicides used on forest sal could be reduced and placed by the natural inhibitor.

At the conclusion of the project, which Catherine worked on for four weeks during August, garlic was found to give promising results and will now be investigated further by AFBI.

Congratulations to Catherine on her work as part of the Nuffield Bursary Scheme and we hope it leads to even greater things for her in the future.
