R.B.A.I. Under 14 Rugby Tournament

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Under 14 Rugby team which performed admirably at the annual R.B.A.I. Under 14 Rugby Tournament, held at Osborne Park on Thursday 27th February.

The team began with the daunting task of taking on last year’s winners Ballymena Academy and, despite the strength of opposition, performed superbly to achieve a well-deserved 0-0 draw following the full twenty minutes of play.  Following this the team were left needing to achieve victory and score more than fourteen points against Banbridge Academy in order to attain top position within their group and, in doing so, qualify for the semi-final of the tournament.  Despite taking a 5-0 lead through a try by centre Ben Davies, however, the team was soon pegged back and, ultimately, could only record an underwhelming draw against a team which they had beaten comfortably earlier in the year but who deserved much credit on the day.

With second place in the group having nevertheless been achieved, G.G.S. took their place in the semi-final of the Plate competition against Methodist College but soon found themselves nine points adrift thanks to three M.C.B. penalties, before a further Methody try secured them a convincing victory.

Despite falling a little short of their own expectations in both of their final two matches, Grosvenor’s players should take encouragement from their opening performance against eventual winners Ballymena Academy, and will hope to reproduce that kind of performance in their remaining competitions between now and the end of the season.

Well done to each of the boys on their efforts on the day, as well as coaches Mr Alan Cowan and Mr Ben Coard who, as always, provided expert guidance and advice from the touchline.
