Representative Recognition 2014

Congratulations to a number of Grosvenor pupils who have recently achieved representative honours in a variety of sports over the summer period.

At the recent U.K. School Games, held in Manchester at the beginning of September, Gareth Reid (Lower 6th), Samuel Gourley and Jake Wylie (both Upper 6th) were selected to represent Northern Ireland in Fencing, with Gareth securing a superb silver medal in the Men’s Foil Team category and Samuel claiming a Team bronze in the Men’s Epee.

In addition Daniel Mayhew (Upper 6th) and Devan McMordie (Lower 6th) were also selected to compete at the Games, in Judo and Wheelchair Basketball respectively, whilst former pupil Stephen Brown – a member of last year’s Upper 6th, claimed bronze the individual Men’s Foil contest.

Elsewhere sailor Tom Purdon (Lower 6th) achieved an outstanding gold medal in the Under 17 Laser 4.7 class whilst representing Northern Ireland at the Leinster 2014 Sailing Championships in July, and backed this up with a superb fifth place finish at the nationwide U.K. Championships, held in Largs, Scotland at the end of August.

What is more gymnast Sarah Beck, Upper 6th, recently achieved incredible success by securing selection to represent Ireland at the forthcoming World Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, China from 3rd – 12th October 2014 whilst Lower 6th canoeist Alistair McCreery, a member of the Northern Ireland ‘Talent Squad’ which trains at, amongst other venues, the London 2012 Olympic race course, has achieved selection to represent Northern Ireland at a number of Pan-Celtic races in England, Scotland and Wales.

Finally, Erin Caughey (Upper 6th) was chosen to represent Ireland at the European Under 18 Girls’ Sevens Tournament, held in Sweden from 12th – 15th September, whilst third form footballer Megan Bell has been selected as a member of the I.F.A’s Girls’ Regional Excellence Squad.

Well done to each of Grosvenor’s sportspeople who have had their efforts rewarded with representative recognition of late; such a range of success reflects the breadth of sporting talent present within the School and we wish them all the best of luck in their respective disciplines throughout the remainder of the season.
