Rugby – 1st XV Update

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s 1st XV rugby team which secured a hard-fought victory over an Ulster Club select XV at Carrickfergus Rugby Club on the evening of Wednesday 28th November.

The tight contest was played at a good pace throughout, with both sides looking to attack from everywhere. The clubs XV took a 10-0 lead relatively early in the match but after a lot of pressure and control Grosvenor scored four times through Matthew Allen (2), Peter Davison and Scott Adams to overturn the deficit, with Stewart Baillie adding a conversion.

In addition Saturday 1st December saw the squad, accompanied by coaches Mr Gary Hunter and Mr Andrew White, travel to Dublin to compete against Wesley College. After going down 5-0 to an early try G.G.S. controlled the game through direct midfield running from forwards Steven Marshall and Matthew Allen. The continuity amongst the backline was impressive but was unfortunately not converted into points, although Stewart Baillie did kick a single penalty to leave the score 5-3. Wesley started the better in 2nd half, however, and scored as a result of some poor defence from Grosvenor, before going on to secure a deserved but by no means comfortable victory.

Despite the eventual 17-3 scoreline in favour of the home side, there were still plenty of positives to take for Grosvenor, who now look forward to the commencement of the Northern Bank Schools’ Cup in January.
