Rugby – 2nd XV Plate Victory

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s 2nd XV rugby squad which defeated Limavady Grammar School in a close encounter in the 2nd XV Plate on the afternoon of Wednesday 25th February.

In a very tight affair Grosvenor began promisingly but failed to convert their chances, only for Limavady to open the scoring midway through the first half from the back of a 5 metre scrum. Despite this setback GGS hit straight back and made good advantage of some excellent phase work by the pack, enabling Kirk Maguire to go over in the corner, after neat passing by the back line, to level proceedings.

Grosvenor were definitely the most dominant team but could not make the most of their chances; their driving maul had been making good inroads all day and was put to good effect after a penalty was conceded by Limavady and they were pinned deep in their own 22. From here Grosvenor caught the line-out ball and mauled it over the line to take the lead for the first time in the match, with the touch down coming from flanker Medani Elshibly. With the wind at their back and Limavady now giving away numerous penalties at the breakdown, Grosvenor went from strength to strength and eased further ahead care of a penalty from Timmy McMullan, ensuring a final victorious scoreline of 13-7 and, with it, a place in the quarter final of the competition.

Well done to the entire squad as well as coaches Mr Stephen Maclaine, Mr Corey Tipping and Mr Jonny Watts; the team is due to face either Wellington College or Carrickfergus Grammar in the next round and we wish them the best of luck for this encounter.
