Rugby and Hockey Tour to Edinburgh

Wednesday 24th October saw the School’s Senior Rugby and Girls’ Hockey squads, accompanied by coaches Mr McCallan, Mr Hunter, Mrs Hunter and Mrs Rankin, set off from Grosvenor in the early hours of the morning to embark on their eagerly anticipated tour to Scotland.

Upon arrival in Edinburgh, via Cairnryan, the boys were dropped at ‘Loreto College’ where they lost by 50 points to 25 against an extremely strong side that included four players named in the Scottish Under 18 squad.  The girls, meanwhile, travelled to play the 2nd XI at ‘George Watson’s College’, the top Hockey School in Scotland, where they secured a superb 2-2 draw.

Thursday 25th saw both squads spend time on the Royal Mile during the morning before travelling to Dollar to face ‘Dollar Academy’ later in the day.  In amazing surroundings the rugby team lost 31-0 to another strong side, with sore bodies from the previous day playing a large part in the defeat. The girls faced Dollar 1st XI, losing 5-0 to, yet again, one of the top hockey sides in Scotland. Following a second consecutive day of rigorous activity the evening saw the entire party give the chance to rest and wind-down with a quiz in their hotel.

The morning of Friday 26th was spent training at the impressive Edinburgh University Sports Centre before the entire party visited the Dungeon Tours in the afternoon, followed by a visit to Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby, to watch Edinburgh vs Scarlets in the evening.

The final day of the tour was spent shopping on Princess Street before the squads headed back to Northern Ireland to begin their long-awaited half-term holiday!

Many thanks to Mr Hunter, Mr McCallan, Mrs Hunter and Mrs Rankin, whose organisation of and attendance on this trip helped to make it possible.  All of the rugby and hockey players who participated in the tour found it highly enjoyable and worthwhile, and the high standard of competition faced during it can only serve to improve the playing standard amongst Grosvenor’s own players.

We will follow the progress of Grosvenor’s senior Rugby and Hockey teams closely throughout the remainder of the season.
