Rugby - Medallion Bowl Success!

Congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar School’s Medallion rugby squad which achieved an outstanding victory over Carrickfergus Grammar School in the final of the Medallion Bowl on the afternoon of Tuesday 12th March.

Grosvenor’s place in the final, staged at B.R.A’s Roughfort playing fields, came following hard-fought victories over R.S. Armagh and Larne Grammar School in the previous two rounds. The match itself proved a tense affair, with Grosvenor centre Jonah McDowell opening the scoring through an unconverted try only for Carrickfergus to hit back with a penalty to bring the score to 5-3.  Despite this minor setback Grosvenor soon took control again, however, and after a series of pick-and-goes prop Andrew Boyd crossed the opposition line for another unconverted try, bringing the score at half-time to 10-3.

Despite a strong start to the second half by C.G.S. Grosvenor’s defence was resolute, and after twenty minutes they secured their third touch-down of the day following a great turnover ball, with Jonah McDowell this time converting his own try to bring the score to a surely unassailable 17-3.

Despite a late try and conversion from Carrick the game finished in their own ‘22’, with Grosvenor pressuring the try line and looking the more likely team to add to their points total.

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s entire squad of players and coaches, led by Mr Andrew Gibson and supported by Stephen Smyth, Corey Tipping and Andrew McConville, who have together helped to bring about a significant improvement in the squad’s results and standard of performance over the course of the season.  The team has secured a number of notable scalps during the year and their form in the second half of the season bodes well as its members now progress up to senior level next year.

Well done to Grosvenor once again and we hope to read of even more sporting success within the school over the remainder of the year.
