Sports Day 2015

On Monday 8th June Grosvenor staged its annual sports day as dozens of enthusiastic competitors in Forms 1 – 3 made to the School’ athletics track to represent their forms classes and take on the cream of Grosvenor’s crop in a range of highly competitive events.

Despite a short period of rain the day proved extremely enjoyable, with a number of impressive performances delivered by a range of pupils on the day.  In the girls’ events Louise McAnea was perhaps the standout performer, attaining a distance of 7.90 metres to take victory in the form two shot. On the boys’ side, meanwhile, third former Ben Gilmore, silver medalist at the recent Ulster Championships, treated those present to a superb piece of sprinting, leading the 100 metre field home in 13.9 seconds. In the second form 100 metres, meanwhile, Fynn Bailie was equally as impressive in storming home in 13.3 seconds. Elsewhere the field events saw James McMaster, recent silver medalist in the Junior Boys’ hammer at the Ulster Schools’ Championships, produce a distance of 8.70 metres to just edge out Jack Keenan by a margin of 10 centimetres, and thus secure victory, in a high calibre form three boys’ shot. So too Josh Hodkinson was particularly impressive in achieving victory in the form two boys’ javelin, with a distance of 24.37 metres.

In the overall form class competitions 1R (56 points), 2E (51 points) and 3E (55 points) were each victorious in the girls’ categories while 1R (40 points), 2S (54 points) and 3V (72 points) prevailed amongst the boys.

Many thanks to P.E. teacher Mr Andrew Gibson whose careful planning of the event was critical to its success, as well as fellow P.E. teacher Mrs Karen Kirk whose work with the school’s athletes throughout the season has been tireless.  Many thanks also to the many staff members who helped on the day, as well as the numerous pupils who gave their all across various events.

The school looks forward to following the fortunes of its athletes again during the summer of 2016.
