Table Tennis - Nelson Cup

Congratulations to Grosvenor table tennis player Ben Watson who became the 2019 winner of the School’s Nelson Cup when he fought to victory over Euan Hanna in the final of the competition at the end of April.

The event, which is contested by the best table tennis players within Grosvenor each Wednesday afternoon - when the School’s Table Tennis Club meets - throughout March and April, took the form of a knock-out contest, with 24 pupils choosing to enter.

The competition ran for several weeks, with lots of closely fought matches being played until the last eight pupils standing were Ben, who was drawn against Jonathan Kyle; Adam Peel, who played Liberty Molloy; Alfie Stone, who took on Harry Douglas; and Rory Doyle, who faced-off against Euan Hanna.  The four matches were played simultaneously and resulted in victories for Ben, Liberty, Alfie and Euan, with Ben then defeating Alfie, and Liberty beating Euan, in the semi-finals, leaving them to contest the final.

In the final itself, Ben started like a rocket, winning the first game 11-2 before edging a much closer second game by 12 points to 10 to secure the Cup for a second consecutive year. Very well done to Ben on this superb achievement and many thanks to Grosvenor’s Teacher in Charge of Table Tennis Mrs Peel, along with fellow teacher Mrs Sullivan, for organising this event and ensuring its successful running.
