Table Tennis - Ulster Open success

Congratulation to Grosvenor’s Year Eight table tennis star Ben Watson who performed superbly to attain victory in the Under 13 Boys event at the Ulster Open, held at Lisburn Racquets Club on Sunday 26th November.

Ben started playing table tennis in September 2016, when he joined Ormeau Table Tennis Club, and competed in his first Challenger tournament at Glenburn Table Tennis Club in February 2017. Ben also represented his primary school team, Andrews Memorial Primary, at a number of events in 2017, remaining undefeated throughout. Having only played a few tournaments since then, however, he decided to enter the Under 13 Boys event at the Ulster Open in the hope of emulating some of the success that he had enjoyed at primary level.

In the preliminary stages of the competition Ben, despite eventually losing the match, managed to take a set off the Irish No 3 seed - itself an impressive achievement. Following this initial round, Ben then managed to not drop a set until the semi final while, in the final istelf, he defeated Aedan McGivern without dropping a set to become the Under 13 Boys Band 2 winner.

Table Tennis Ireland has recently updated its rankings and currently Ben is ranked 14 in Ireland and 7 in Ulster for the Under 13 Boys category. With still another year to play in this category, the future looks bright.

Well done to Ben on his impressive achievement and we wish him the best of luck with his future table tennis-related endeavors.
