Tennis - Ulster Schools’ Intermediate Plate success

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Intermediate girls’ tennis team, comprising pupils Olivia Lockhart (captain), Jessica Sayer, Rachel Gallagher, Hannah Murphy and Kirsten McBride, which prevailed in the final of the Ulster Schools’ Intermediate Plate, held at Belfast Boat Club on Tuesday 21st June.

The team’s path to the final of the competition which, as a nine counties championship involves schools from as far as Donegal and Monaghan, saw them defeat Bloomfield Collegaite by four matches to two in a hard-fought quarter final before emerging victorious by an impressive five matches to one in the semi-final against Cambridge House Grammar School on Friday 17th June, held at the neutral venue of Antrim Grammar School.

Determined to finish the competition with some silverware to show for their superb efforts, all five members of the team again performed superbly in the final to convincingly defeat Down High School, again by a scoreline of 5-1.

The team’s achievement is made all the more impressive by the fact that on the Friday of their semi-final the girls came straight out of their GSCE Biology paper and onto the bus to contest their semi-final!

Well done to each of the quintet of pupils involved in achieving this superb feat, as well as coach Mrs Lynda McIlvenny, Head of Girls’ P.E. at GGS, without whose coaching and expertise the team would not have been able to perform so commendably throughout the competition.

The entire school community is extremely proud of the team’s achievements and looks forward to celebrating further sporting successes within the school again during the next academic year.
