The Eastside Awards 2019 – ‘Young Person of the Year’ category

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Jonathan McLaughlin, Year Nine, who has been shortlisted as a finalist at the impending Eastside Awards 2019, in the prestigious ‘Young Person of the Year’ category.

Jonathan, who has dwarfism, was nominated by the School following a series of impressive achievements over the past year; in particular, he excelled at the National Dwarf Games, held in Birmingham last May, where he fought off stiff competition to secure three gold medals – in the 4 x 60 metre relay, floor hockey and cycling; as well as three silvers – in the 40 metre sprint, javelin and shot; and two bronze medals – in basketball and the 60 metre sprint.

As well as his outstanding success in this competition, however, Jonathan’s nomination is also a reflection on how impressively he adapted to life in Grosvenor during the academic year 2017/2018: throughout his time in Year Eight Jonathan displayed an exemplary, positive attitude towards school and, in particular, a willingness to involve himself in the wide range of activities that the School has to offer - participating in sports such as rugby, badminton, football, cricket and athletics, amongst others.

Well done to Jonathan on his nomination for this prestigious accolade – the Awards Ceremony itself will take place on the evening of Friday 25th January 2019 at Hastings Stormont Hotel, where Jonathan will be accompanied by members of his family as well as Grosvenor Principal Dr. Frances Vasey, Vice Principals Dr Robert Rolleston and Mr Philip Brunt, along with his Classroom Assistant, Mr Neill Cushley. In addition the evening will feature music provided by Grosvenor’s own String Quintet – comprising pupils Ruth Sellar, Kara Purdy, Tyler Smith, Karl Kirkpatrick and James Magrath, who will be conducted by GGS Head of Music Miss Rosemary Foster.

All at Grosvenor are extremely proud of Jonathan’s nomination for this prestigious award and wish him the best of luck on the evening; hopefully we will be celebrating yet another GGS success following the conclusion of the ceremony itself.
