‘The Snowman Family Concert with The Ulster Orchestra and Christopher Bell’

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Amy Patton, Year Nine, who was recently selected to perform at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall alongside The Ulster Orchestra and renowned conductor Chrstopher Bell, in a festive performance of ‘The Snowman’ on the afternoon of Saturday 1st December.

Amy’s selection to sing the solo performance of ‘Walking in The Air’, which forms the centrepiece of ‘The Snowman’, came following auditions in October through the Belfast Philarmonic Youth Choir (Phil Youth), which she has attended since starting at Grosvenor, having previously attended ‘Phil Kids’ prior to that.

During November, Amy then benefitted from four coaching sessions in preparation for ‘The Snowman’, two with one of the singing teachers at Phil Youth and two with professional opera singer Rebekah Coffey at her studio in Belfast.

On the day of the performance, Amy had a piano rehearsal of ‘Walking in the Air’ with Christopher Bell and accompanying pianist, before being joined by the full orchestra for a rehearsal of the entire piece.

Amy said that she that enjoyed every second of the experience and would be keen to participate in similar such events again. Following the success of the performance, she also says that the most important thing is to be believe in yourself, despite the nerves!

Even before to her performance in ‘The Snowman’, Amy had enjoyed a plethora of music-related experiences and successes, such as receipt of the ‘Endeavour Award’, at the City of Belfast School of Music, for her participation in the Introductory Strings Group, singing a solo at a ‘Phil Kids’ concert to an audience of approximately eight hundred people, and victory at the Holywood Music Festival 2018 (Junior Repertoire Class, Under 14), for which she received the Jack Woods trophy.

Well done to Amy on being selected to perform at such a prestigious event – it is testament to her determination, diligence and talent that she performed so well on the day and we look forward to reporting on many more of her musical succeses over the years to come.
