Ulster schoolgirls’ Super League Tier ‘B’ Final

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s First XI girls’ hockey team which performed commendably in finishing as runners-up in the Ulster schoolgirls’ Super League Tier B competition, the final of which was held at Civil Service Hockey Club on the afternoon of Wednesday 21st November.

The team secured its place in the final of the tournament following qualification from its initial qualifying group, which included some high-quality opposition in the form of Kilkeel High School, Hunterhouse College and Glenlola Collegiate. Following this the team performed superbly to defeat Foyle College by two goals to one in their quarter final, which was followed by an impressive 1-0 victory over Bloomfield Collegiate in the semis, thanks to a decisive finish from Year Fourteen pupil Sophie Larmour.

In the final itself, meanwhile, the team came up again Glenlola Collegiate, the tournament favourites, for the second time in the competition; despite the latter’s formidable reputation, however, the Grosvenor girls did not allow themselves to be intimidated and soon set about threatening the opposition goal with a series of impressive attacks. The team’s collective energy, motivation and enthusiasm clearly paid dividends as goals from Sophie Larmour and then Jenna Breen saw the team twice take the lead, only to be pegged back on both occasions, to leave the score tantalizingly poised at two goals apiece at half-time. Following a goalless second half it soon became clear that the match would have to be decided in the most cruel manner possible – by penalty run-ins, and despite a courageous effort by each of Grosvenor’s penalty takers, they were narrowly edged out as Glenlola sneaked home to the closest of victories.

Despite Grosvenor’s heart-wrenching defeat, huge credit is extended to each member of its dedicated squad who have helped the team to improve significantly throughout the course of the season thus far. In particular, captain Claire McKane, Year Fourteen, has led the team exceptionally well while their coach, Head of Girls’ P.E. Mrs Rachael Murdock, has also worked tirelessly to get the best out of the players at her disposal.

Well done, once again, to everybody who contributed to Grosvenor’s impressive campaign and we look forward to the team building further on its success over the remainder of the season.
