Ulster Schools’ Cross Country Championships 2019

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Dylan McBride, Year Eleven, who performed superbly to achieve gold, in the Intermediate age group, at the Ulster Schools’ Cross Country Championships, held at Mallusk Playing Fields on Wednesday 13th February.

Victory for Dylan in this ferociously contested race is made all the more impressive by the fact that he was mostly competing against athletes one year older than himself; despite this apparent disadvantage, however, Dylan’s determination and talent were evident in abundance as he powered home to secure an Ulster Schools’ Cross Country title for the fourth consecutive year – a truly phenomenal feat.

Elsewhere Grosvenor was well represented in the Minor Boys’ race as Josh Ness performed impressively to place 16th overall - only just missing out on qualification for the upcoming Irish Schools’ Championships, closely supported by Jake Seaton, who crossed the line in 21st position. In the Mini Boys’ race, meanwhile, Zac Anderson performed impressively to finish in a commendable 33rd position, while in the Senior Boys’ event Joel Harrison also produced a courageous effort to finish 32nd.

On the girls’ side, meanwhile, the standout GGS performance of the day was arguably recorded by Eva Wainwright, who finished in 13th place in the Minor Girls’ race to secure Irish Schools’ qualification, while the Mini Girls’ team as a whole performed strongly to finish in fourth place in the team event - just two points off third position; of the six runners who comprised the Grosvenor team, Erin Cross produced a fine performance to cross the line in twelfth position, ably supported by Liberty Molly (26th), Rhian Weatherup (75th), Lucy Storey (102nd) and Sophie Tinman (106th).

Well done to all of Grosvenor’s athletes who represented the school so well on the day; in particular, we wish Dylan and Eva the best of luck as they prepare to represent the School at the GloHelath Irish Schools’ Cross Country Championships, due to be held on Saturday 9th March in Kildare.
