Ulster Schools’ Table Tennis Team Championships 2019

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s talented boys' Under 13 'A' table tennis team, which performed superbly in being crowned Ulster champions at the annual ‘Ulster Schools' Table Tennis Team Championships’, held at Lisburn Racquets Club on Wednesday 6th February.

Having topped their initial qualifying group the team, comprising pupils Ben Watson, Euan Hanna, Alfie Stone, Rory Doyle, Aaron McDowell and Alex Camacho, emerged victorious from a close-fought semi-final encounter against Grosvenor’s own Under 13 ‘B’ team, before defeating Belfast High School in the final to prevail as overall winners of the competition – a truly phenomenal achievement which will now see them move forward to represent their province at the Irish finals, due to be held in Dublin this May.

In addition, the members of the aforementioned Boys Under 13 ‘B’ team – Thomas Norman, Junior Close, Jonathan Kyle, Daniel Campbell, Charles Campbell and Josh Corbett, also deserve considerable recognition as they recovered from semi-final defeat against their GGS counterparts to secure the bronze medal in their category, meaning that they are now ranked the third best Under 13 team in Ulster.

Elsewhere Grosvenor’s Under 19 girls’ team, made up of Lucy Craig, Lucy Johnston, Emma Mackey, Katherine Harrison, Abbie Woods and Liberty Molloy, performed commendably to also secure bronze medals in their respective category while, last but not least, the School’s Boys' Under 13 ‘C’ team, featuring Stanley Rintoul, Harry Douglas, Harry Scott, Adam Peel, Joshua Lyons and Noah Burcombe, also performed well to reach the final of their Plate competition, where they were unfortunate to lose out but took great encouragement from the potential which they demonstrated during their impressive overall display.

In all GGS had an incredible twenty-four pupils participating at this year’s Championships – an impressive feat in itself, before the previously stated successes of its various teams is even taken into consideration. Well done to all of the Grosvenor pupils who performed so well on the day, as well as the School’s Teacher in Charge of Table Tennis Mrs Andria Peel, who accompanied its participating contingent to the competition and has been responsible for the running of its highly popular after-school Table Tennis Club since the beginning of September.

We now look forward to reporting on many further table tennis-related successes over the remainder of the academic year and beyond.
