Ulster Super League semi-final victory

Congratulations to the School’s First XI girls’ hockey team which secured its place in the final of the ‘Ulster Super League’ following victory over Cambridge House Grammar School in the semi-final of the competition on Saturday 12th November.

Following success in the group stages of the contest, as well as a 3-2 victory over Bloomfield Collegiate in the quarter finals, the team entered its semi-final, held at the Valley Leisure Centre, with high hopes of success.

In the opening fifteen minutes of the encounter Grosvenor put a lot of pressure on the Cambridge House defence but were unfortunately unable to convert any of their shots. With the scores sitting at 0-0 at half time, the girls were required to up their game in the second half and this duly occurred thanks to a flick taken by team captain Hannah Blair, which placed them into a 1-0 lead. Despite conceding shortly after to bring the score back to 1-1, Grosvenor maintained pressure on the opposition goal throughout the latter stages of the match and were eventually rewarded when, in the final two minutes of the contest, Rachel Gallagher finished off a rebounded ball to secure a 2-1 victory for GGS.

Victory in the match secured Grosvenor its first hockey final in twenty three years – a superb achievement for all involved. The team will now face Larne Grammar School in the final of the event on the evening of Friday 18th November, commencing at 6.30pm at Ballymena Academy – all support on the evening is much appreciated.

Well done to all members of the squad on their impressive achievement, as well as their coach Mrs Charlene Hunter, without whose dedication and direction the team would not have excelled as it has done so markedly this season.

We now look forward to hopefully bringing some silverware back to Grosvenor following this Friday’s final.
