Vauxhall Northern Ireland Senior Schools’ Cup

On the afternoon of Tuesday 17th December Grosvenor’s Under 16 side secured is place in the quarter-final of the ‘Vauxhall Northern Ireland Senior Schools’ Cup’ following a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Fort Hill College at Seaview in the ‘Tie of the Round’.

Grosvenor dominated in the early stages and Fort Hill keeper Kyle Brown was in constant action, saving well from Cameron Scates and Kurtis Elliott early on.  Despite this, however, on 29 minutes the keeper was unable to do anything to keep out a 22 yard piledriver from the talented Callum Byers.

As GGS continued to press forward Brown did well to deny further efforts by Elliott and Byers.  Four minutes before the break Scates doubled the lead, however, volleying the ball into the roof of the net after Brown had blocked a shot by Elliott.

Following the restart Fort Hill pushed forward and Grosvenor keeper Lex Walker had to react quickly to gather a dangerous cross by Jordan Arbuthnot, with Daniel Hamilton in close attention.  The keeper then blocked a close range shot by Arbuthnot who had been put through by Colin Crawford.

Despite this, Grosvenor were soon on the attack once more and on 49 minutes Byers tested Brown with a 25 yard shot that was well held by the keeper.  One minute later Byers dribbled past three defenders before sending another 25 yard drive just over the bar.  On the hour mark, however, the industrious midfielder, who was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ for an outstanding performance, grabbed his second goal, shooting home after Elliott had twice hit the post.

In the final minute Elliott completed the scoring with a simple tap-in from close range to complete a comprehensive victory.

Well done to the Grosvenor team, as well as its coach Mr Derek Moore, on such a resounding victory – they now await the draw for the quarter final of the competition with anticipation.
