Youth Parliament: House of Commons Debates

Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Matthew Carson, Lower 6th, who was recently invited to the House of Commons to speak as a Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP) in a series of debates chaired by Parliamentary Speaker John Bercow.

The purpose of the debates was to decide on the Youth Parliament’s priority campaign for the coming year and saw MYPs from across the UK attend.  As a Parliament it was decided that Northern Ireland’s specific focus will be to campaign for the right to vote for 16 and 17 year olds in all Public Elections.

Matthew was elected to the Youth Parliament in March 2013 to represent East Belfast alongside seventeen other young people from constituencies across Northern Ireland.   The Youth Parliament has members from across the United Kingdom, all of them elected by young people aged 11-18

At the recent House of Commons sitting Matthew spoke on a motion regarding Youth Unemployment – his thoughtful comments and measured delivery were most impressive and suggested that a long-term future in Politics is a strong possibility.
