Overview

The Religious Studies Department encourages pupils to foster a spirit of curiosity about the meaning and purpose of life. Pupils are challenged to develop an understanding of the spectrum of religious beliefs and practices which exist enabling them to reflect on their own beliefs about God, humanity, the world in which we live and what they believe to be right and wrong.

Aims

The Religious Studies Department in Grosvenor Grammar School aims to:

  • create in pupils an academic and analytical mind-set which seeks to understand, examine, evaluate and empathise with a variety of beliefs and perspectives

  • help pupils develop mutual understanding, respect and sensitivity towards the views of others

  • encourage pupils to think about the meaning and purpose of life, issues of right and wrong, beliefs about God and the place of humans in the world

Key Stage 3

Pupils in Years 8-10 complete a varied programme of study covering different religious traditions including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. Units studied include:

  • Year 8: The history of the Bible, The Patriarchs, Hinduism

  • Year 9: Moses, Judaism, The Life of Jesus

  • Year 10: The Christian Church, Islam, Introduction to Ethics

Key Stage 4

At GCSE level, pupils focus on major ethical debates including the morality of capital punishment, euthanasia and abortion.

Pupils follow the GCSE Religious Studies (CCEA Specification).

(Short Course pupils complete Unit 6; Full Course pupils complete Units 6 & 7)

Key Stage 5

At A Level pupil complete a textual study of the Synoptic Gospels and a historical study of Church History.

Pupils follow the A Level Religious Studies (CCEA Specification).
