‘The Wooden Floor Company Girls Super League’

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s First XI Hockey Team which participated in the recent final of ‘The Wooden Floor Company Girls Super League’, Tier B, despite losing out to an impressive Larne Grammar School side in the final.

Entering the final with no shortage of nerves and excitement, Grosvenor’s players played some super hockey in stages, but could have no complaints at finishing on the wrong end of a 3-0 score line, with Larne playing with confidence and skill throughout. Despite the disappointing nature of the result, the team could take great encouragement from their impressive run to the final, with Ellie Burgess, in particular, performing superbly to receive the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Grosvenor’s place in the final came following a series of impressive results in the earlier rounds of the competition. Commencing in mid-September, the girls narrowly lost their first group game, against Regent House Grammar School, but went on to pick up convincing wins against Lagan College and Cambridge House Grammar School. This saw them finish second in the group and progress to the quarter final stage of the competition.

The quarter final then saw the girls play against Down High School on a wet Wednesday afternoon. From the first whistle the girls played superb hockey and won the game 2-0 in a dominant display of hockey. This then set up a semi-final against Foyle and Londonderry College, at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club. Here, the girls started strongly but struggled to score. In the second half, however, Eve Albert opened the scoring with a well taken goal on the back post before Irish Under 18 International Eva Wainwright made it 2-0 with a great solo effort, sealing the team’s place in the final.

Well done to the squad of players and coaches on an excellent campaign, the success of which will now see them progress into Tier A next year – we wish them the best of luck as they make the step up to this elite level next season.
