‘Ulster Schools’ Badminton League - Division Two’ success

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Senior Boys’ Badminton Team which defeated R.B.A.I. ‘Bs’ by four matches to two to secure victory in the final of the ‘Ulster Schools’ Badminton League - Division Two’, held at the National Badminton Centre.

The Grosvenor team, comprising Rajaram Polishetty, Lukas Leung, Karl Martin and Kyle Bates, secured its place in the final following a victory and draw over Coleraine Grammar and RBAI 'B' respectively in the group stages, followed by a convincing victory over Sullivan Upper in the semi-final;  setting up a 'Finals Day' rematch against RBAI 'B'.

In the final itself the team flew out of the blocks with three singles wins from Rajaram, Lukas and Kyle meaning that only one more match win was required for the victory. Unfortunately, however, with Karl losing his singles and Lukas and Raj losing 21-20 in the third set of their doubles, the match all of a sudden became very tightly contested. Despite R.B.A.I.’s comeback, however, the Grosvenor team was soon able to recover itself as Karl quickly teamed up with Kyle to bring home the win with a two straights victory in their doubles encounter.

A special mention must go to Mo Aahill who didn't get any court time in final but did play his part in group stages and semi finals.

Very well done to the boys on their impressive achievement - this was the first time the school had entered a badminton team in a competitive event in over thirty years: the boys’ outstanding performance will hopefully pave the way for many more successes over the seasons to come.

Grosvenor’s victorious squad celebrates following victory in the final.
