Overview
Few subjects are as relevant to our everyday lives as Government and Politics. Studying Government and Politics gives pupils a real insight into the world in which they live. They learn how the political decisions that affect our lives are made and who has the power and authority to make those decisions. They also develop analytical and evaluation skills as they debate topical and controversial issues, form their own political opinions and study different ideological viewpoints.
Aims
To develop the pupils’ knowledge and understanding of politics and political systems at home and abroad
Enable pupils to interpret current events based on a sound basis of knowledge and analysis of the available evidence
Help pupils appreciate the study of politics as a worthy and valuable discipline in its own right
Support pupils in developing mature and intelligent attitudes towards the world in which they live
Encourage pupils to actively participate as members of a democratic society
Enable pupils to understand their role as citizens in both the local, national and international context
Encourage a lifelong interest in government and politics
Ethos
“To develop open-minded young adults who will be tolerant and respectful of the opinions of others but who will also be able to defend their own positions by using substantiated evidence and factual support. The department aims to give pupils the time and resources to think carefully about what is important to them and what they believe.”
