District ‘A’ Track and Field Championships 2022 – Intermediate and Senior age groups
Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Intermediate and Senior athletes who enjoyed incredible success at the District ‘A’ Track and Field Championships, held at the Mary Peters Track on Wednesday 27th April; claiming a total of ten gold, six silver and eight bronze medals.
At Senior Level, Year 13 pupil Matthew Sykes led the way for the boys, winning the 100 metres event in an impressive time of 11.3 seconds; a feat emulated for the girls by Jenna Breen, who claimed victory in the Senior Girls’ 200 metres (25.5s), and Lucy Simpson (100m hurdles; 19.0s), as well as by the Senior Boys’ 4 x 100 metres relay team, comprising Robbie Dugan, Charlie Parke, Michael Baird and Ben Johnston (47.4s).
At Intermediate level, Year 12 pupil Mia Ferguson was the star performer, claiming two individual gold medals – in the IG 100 metres (12.90s) and 80 metres hurdles (12.1s), as well as a further gold in the 4 x 100 metres relay (52.58s), alongside Eva Wainwright, Ellie Burgess and Amelee McCullough. In addition, Mia’s gold medal performances were matched by Eva Wainwright, who claimed gold in the IG 300 metres (44.62s), and, on the boys’ side, by Finn Cross, who performed superbly to achieve a middle distance double by attaining victory in both the 800 (2m 05.17s) and 1500 metres (4m 43.98s) races.
Elsewhere, silver medals were achieved by Matthew Meredith (IB Shot; 9.55m), Cara Miller (SG Triple Jump; 10.01m), Amelee McCullough (IG 200 metres; 28.44s) and Ellie Burgess (IG 300 metres; 45.09s), as well as the Senior Boys’ 4 x 400 metres relay team, of Robbie Dugan, Matthew Munn, Michael Baird, Ben Johnston (4 minutes 26.5s).
Finally, further podium places were secured by bronze medalists Robbie Dugan (SB long jump; 5.96m), Ben Johnston (SB triple jump; 11.38m), Jonah Marshall (IB 200 metres; 25.24s), Freya Murray (SG 100 metres; 14.0s and SG long jump; 4.77m), Cara Miller (SG High Jump; 1.40m) and Liberty Molly (IG 3000 metres; 12 minutes 51. 32s), as well as the Intermediate Boys’ 4 x 100 metres relay team, of Josh Ness, Sam Stewart, Stefan Buick, Jonah Marshall (49.45s).
Very well done to the aforementioned pupils on their impressive performances on the day, which saw a total of 24 competitors qualify for the Ulster Schools’ Championships, due to take place on Saturday 22nd May. Their Mini, Minor and Junior compatriots will now aim to emulate their achievements when they take to the track next Thursday.
