‘Electric Ireland’ Super Schools Girls’ Football Festival

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 Girls’ football teams, each of whom performed impressively at the recent ‘Electric Ireland’ Super Schools Girls’ Football Festival.

The tournament, held at the Valley Leisure Centre on Thursday 1st May, saw both teams progress to the latter stages of their competitions. In the case of the Year 8/9 team, they finished as best runners-up in their group after winning four out of their five matches, with Ellie Tohill scoring five goals, Hannah McKinstry, two, and Caitlin Shields and Lucy Cunningham contributing one goal apiece. Following this, the girls were then victorious in their semi-final after victory, on penalties, against ‘Our Lady and St. Patrick’s College, Knock’, following a 0-0 score line during normal time. Despite this, however, the team was unfortunate to lose in a nail-biting final to Parkhall Integrated College, which also went to penalties after yet another another stalemate.

The Year 10/11 team, meanwhile, won its group after three consecutive nil-nil draws, followed by a 4-0 victory in the final match, in which Gracie Ashbridge performed superbly to score a hat-trick. Following this, however, the girls were unfortunate to come up against an excellent Dominican College team in the semis, where they were on the receiving end of a 2-0 reverse.

Despite not landing either of the trophies on offer, all twenty-two of Grosvenor’s players on the day should take great satisfaction from an impressive set of displays, with both teams performing well to reach the knock-out stages.

Bring on next year!
