Grosvenor strikes gold!
Congratulations to Grosvenor athletes Jenna Breen and Mia Ferguson, as well as the members of its Intermediate Girls’ 4 x 100 metres relay team, each of whom secured victory at the 2022 Ulster Schools’ Track and Field Championships, held at the Antrim Forum on Saturday 21st May.
In the Senior Girls’ age group, sprinter Jenna performed superbly to cross the line first in the 200 metres, recording a time of 25.44 seconds to secure, in total, her fourth individual Ulster Schools’ title in her final year of eligibility – a phenomenal achievement. Having first secured gold as an intermediate athlete in 2017, it was the perfect way to round off her Ulster Schools’ career for an athlete who, including relay titles, now has seven Ulster Schools’ gold medals to her name.
In the Intermediate Girls’ category, meanwhile, Year 12 pupil Mia Ferguson emulated Jenna’s sprinting success in the 100 metres, crossing the line in an impressive 13.00 seconds to secure gold. Not content with just the one individual medal, however, Mia also performed commendably in the 80 metres hurdles to claim bronze in 12.37 seconds, before joining teammates Eva Wainwright, Ellie Burgess and Amelee McCullough to secure her second gold of the day – helping the team to an impressive winning time of 51.57 seconds in the relay.
In addition to the outstanding performances of Grosvenor’s gold medalists, a number of the School’s pupils also performed superbly to claim places on the podium, namely: Robbie Dugan (Senior Boys’ long jump – bronze; 5.72m), Martha Orr (Junior Girls’ 200 metres – bronze; 27.59s), Lucy Simpson (Senior Girls’ 100 metres hurdles – bronze;18.92s), as well as the Senior Girls’ 4x100 metres relay team, comprising Freya Murray, Lucy Simpson, Eve Stanfield and Cara Miller – bronze; 53.65s; the Senior Boys’ 4x100 metres relay team, featuring Robbie Dugan, Charlie Parke, Michael Hewitt and Ben Johnston – bronze; 46.20s; and the Senior Boys’ 4 x 400 metres relay team, of Robbie Dugan, Thomas McAleer, Michael Baird and Ben Johnston, - bronze; 3 minutes 51.33 seconds.
Commenting on the success of the School’s athletes, Grosvenor Principal Dr Vasey said:
“Our pupils are amazing ambassadors for the School; it is fantastic to see extra-curricular activities returning and well done to everyone involved!”
Well done to each of Grosvenor’s athletes on their impressive performances, as well as their dedicated coaches whose commitment has helped them to shine: they will now hope to add to their medal haul when they compete at the Irish Schools’ Track and Field Championships, due to be held at Tullamore Harriers Athletics Club on Saturday 4th June.
