Irish Schools' Track and Field Championships 2023

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s talented track and field athletes who represented the School with distinction at the Irish Schools’ Track and Field Championships 2023, held in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, over Friday 2nd June and Saturday 3rd June.

In total the School had seven athletes competing at the championships, with Grace Wallace, Year 10, kicking off proceedings in the Junior Girls’ Triple Jump on the Friday night. Here, Grace recorded an impressive personal best jump of 9.25m in the first round. This was enough to see her progress to the final round of the competition, where she finished in a commendable 6th place in what was her first Irish Schools’ competition.

Early on Saturday morning, Deputy Head Boy Karl Martin, Year 13, aimed to continue his impressive form in the Senior Boys’ Triple Jump competition. On this occasion, Karl produced an excellent first round performance of 12.44m to comfortably progress to the final round, where he finished in a highly creditable 4th place. Having only recently taken up the triple jump, Karl will no doubt be back next year with his sights set firmly on a podium finish.

In a highly competitive Junior Boys’ 100m Final, Ben Sykes, Year 10,  produced a personal best performance of 11.54 seconds to finish in an excellent 4th place - this represented a significant improvement on Ben’s performance in last year’s competition and bodes well for his medal chances at future Irish Schools’ Championships.

Meanwhile, Noah Harper, also Year 10, continued his impressive form over the middles distances with a strong 4th place finish in the Under 16 Mile competition - in extremely hot conditions, Noah ran with impressive maturity and was rewarded with a personal best of 4 minutes 40 seconds.

Finally, the last event of the day saw the Senior Boys 4x400m relay team of Josh Ness, Thomas McAleer, Karl Martin and Finn Cross take to the track. While a 7th place finish was a disappointing result for this team, it was a valuable learning experience for the squad. With three members of the team eligible to run again next year, the defending Ulster Champions will no doubt be back to challenge for a medal next year.

Well done to all of the aforementioned pupils on their highly successful track and field seasons – although the School did not return from Tullamore with any silverware on this occasion, its athletes equipped themselves well and will, hopefully, build further upon this success next year.
