Table Tennis - The Nelson Cup

Congratulations to Ben Watson, Year 12, who prevailed in a tight contest against close friend and rival Junior Close to secure the Nelson Cup 2022 in a keely contested event.

The competition, an internal school event, was held just prior to Easter, with the quarter finals featuring eventual winner Ben, finalist Junior (12S), as well as Euan Hanna (11R), Thomas Norman (11N), Melissa Johnston (10V), Adam Cheung (13TG1), Adam Osborne (10V) and Joseph Rainey (11S).

Following a number of closely fought encounters, the semi-final line-up saw Ben drawn against Euan, and Junior line up against Melissa. Just as in the quarter-final matches, the semi-finals were nail-biting and, once again, closely fought; Ben and Junior eventually winning their respective matches 2-1 to set the scene for a mouthwatering final: number 1 seed Ben versus number 2 seed Junior.

On the day, both players performed superbly, both offensively and defensively, but there could only be one winner, with Ben just having the edge to add his name to the list of recipients of the Nelson Cup. For Ben, his victory is just the latest of many table tennis-related successes in recent times (see elsewhere on ‘Latest News’, @GGSSport and @GrosvenorGS) and he should be rightfully proud of his victory in such a keenly contested competition.

Ben Watson - winner of The Nelson Cup 2022.
