Table Tennis - Ulster Schools’ Team Championships

Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Under 15 Girls’ and Boys’ table tennis teams, each of which performed superbly to achieve victory at the prestigious Ulster Schools’ Team Championships, held at Lisburn Racquets Club on Wednesday 6th April.

In the Under 15 Girls’ event, Grosvenor’s team, comprising Lily Parke (9S), Melissa Johnston (10V), Naomi Humes (9R), Emma Mackey (11V), Amelia Jankowska (9G) and Gracie Ashbridge (9S), performed superbly to secure a place in a play-off alongside Bloomfield Collegiate and Sullivan Upper School. Following victory over Sullivan, the girls progressed to the final against Bloomfield where, following a series of very close singles matches, the outcome was dependent on the results of the doubles matches. Despite much toing and froing, Grosvenor’s partnerships eventually proved too strong for Bloomfield, with the girls prevailing narrowly to achieve victory and, with it, secure the crown of Ulster Champions.

Not to be outdone, the School’s Under 15 Boys’ ‘A’ team, made up of Ben Watson (12S), Junior Close (12S), Euan Hanna (11R), Thomas Norman (11N), Joseph Rainey (11S) and Alfie Stone (11N), then dominated their event, progressing out of their group stage easily, with a one hundred percent record, before enjoying a 6-0 whitewash victory in their semi-final against Killicomaine Junior High School to place them in the final against Banbridge Academy. Once again, Grosvenor’s impressive team of performers proved too strong for their gutsy opponents, with each player again securing victory in their singles matches to achieve overall victory and, in the process, emulate their female colleagues by securing the title of Ulster Champions.

A huge congratulations to each of Grosvenor’s teams on their impressive victories; they will now hope to go one step further by securing the title of Irish champions when they compete at the All-Ireland Championships, in Dublin, after Easter.
