Congratulations to Grosvenor pupil Eva Wainwright, who was recently selected as a member of the elite Ulster Under 16 Girls’ Hockey Squad.

As part of a lengthy selection process, Eva was originally chosen as a member of the 80-strong Ulster Talent Development Squad, which required her to attend eight weeks’ worth of training sessions from September 2019 onwards, held at Mossley Hockey Club, following which the size of the squad was cut approximately in half, with the remaining members training for a further six weeks after Christmas.

Following an enforced break during COVID, Eva was informed of her selection onto the final, 18-strong Ulster Under 16s squad early in the summer, which saw her attend further training sessions in Jordanstown during July before participating in a series of training matches during September and October.

Unfortunately, Eva has not yet had the opportunity to represent Ulster in a competitive match as the planned Interprovincial series has now been postponed on two occasions and is yet to be rescheduled in these uncertain times.

In addition to Eva’s success, fellow Grosvenor pupils Jake Murray and Holly McDowell, both Year 14, were unfortunate to reach the final-22 stage of Ulster Under 18 selection, only to narrowly miss out on a place in the final 18 of their respective squads. Nevertheless, they are to commended on what is still a most impressive achievement.

Well done to Eva, Jake and Holly on their superb recent performances, which are a credit not only to their own dedication and talent, but also the nurturing that they have received during their time in the thriving GGS hockey environment.
