Under 16 Football – Belfast Shield success

Congratulations to the School’s Under 16 Boys’ Football Team which secured the inaugural Belfast Shield following victory over Regent House Grammar School in the final, held at Blanchflower Stadium on Tuesday 28th March.

In a closely fought encounter, Grosvenor started well and were dominant in possession. However, just a few minutes before half-time, Regent scored a breakaway goal against the run of play to lead 1-0 at the interval. In response, Grosvenor started the second half strongly, and managed to secure a much-deserved equaliser through Sam Logan. Following this, the remainder of the match was cagey, and despite Grosvenor having a number of clearcut chances, the game was all-square after extra time. In the resulting penalty shootout, Grosvenor missed their first penalty, and Regent just needed to score their fifth and final penalty to win the match. Fortunately for Grosvenor, however, the penalty was blazed over the bar. Furthermore, Regent missed their first penalty in sudden death, ensuring victory for a delighted squad of Grosvenor players.

Grosvenor’s place in the final came following a 4-1 victory over Boys’ Model in the Round of 16, a victory on penatlies against St. Joseph’s College in the quarter final, and a 3-2 win against a much-heralded De La Salle team in the semis.

Well done to Grosvenor’s talented squad of players, led by Head Coach Mr Johnston, on their impressive victory – just the latest piece of silverware to be added to a burgeoning football trophy cabinet over recent seasons.
