Academy Awards and BAFTAs - nomination success
Congratulations to Film Director, and former Grosvenor pupil, Ross White, whose film ‘An Irish Goodbye’ has been nominated for awards at this year's Academy Awards and BAFTAs.
The short film, written and directed by Ross, along with his creative partner Tom Berkeley, is one of the five nominees selected for the 'Best British Short Film' category at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards. In addition, the film was also recently shortlisted in the top 15 in the 'Live Action Short' category at the 2023 Oscars and is the only UK and Irish film to feature on the list.
Set against the backdrop of a working farm in rural Northern Ireland, ‘An Irish Goodbye’ is a black comedy following the reunion of estranged brothers Turlough and Lorcan following the untimely death of their mother.
Ross’ latest success comes after he previously had his debut short film selected for the world-renowned Santa Barbara Film Festival, in 2020, where it was also the only film from the UK and Ireland selected to compete for ‘Best Live Action Short’.
The film, ‘Roy’, also written and directed alongside Tom Berkeley, starred the BAFTA winning Harry Potter and ‘Game of Thrones’ actor David Bradley, telling the story of a reclusive widower who looks for brief moments of companionship by cold calling strangers from the phone book; when he accidentally dials the number for Cara, an unlikely friendship is born.
Ross attended Grosvenor between 2006 and 2013, studying GCSE and A level Drama as well as starring in many of its famed School Productions, before heading off to train as an actor in London. With a long held passion for storytelling, Ross is now pursuing his ambitions in both acting and writing/directing.
A huge congratulations to Ross on the latest of his recent successes - we wish him the best of luck at the upcoming Academy Award and BAFTA ceremonies and look forward to seeing many more of his projects hit our screens in the near future.
