Football – Belfast Schools’ Cup success!
Congratulations to Grosvenor’s Under 16 Football Team which performed superbly to secure the School’s first ever Under 16 Belfast Cup title during a hard-fought encounter against ‘Our Lady and St. Patrick’s College, Knock’, held on Wednesday 23rd March.
The final, staged at Blanchflower Park - the newly renovated home of Harland and Wolff Welders F.C. - saw Grosvenor start brightly, with winger Sam Stewart scoring early to put them ahead before his team was unfortunate to not extend its lead - having two further potential goals ruled out following very close offside decisions.
Despite Grosvenor’s first half dominance, OLPSCK had the chance to equalise on the brink of half-time with a penalty kick, only for Grosvenor goalkeeper - Year 11 pupil Watson Kingham, to heroically save to keep his team ahead, making a hero of himself in the process.
In the second half, Sam Stewart’s pace in wide areas again proved to be troublesome for the OLPSCK defence, as he raced through to slot home and, therefore, double Grosvenor’s lead midway through the half. OLSPCK pulled a goal back shortly after to make it a very nervy final ten minutes for the GGS players, coaches and supporters, before some steady defending and goalkeeping from the aforementioned Watson Kingham proved enough to see Grosvenor through.
At the final whistle there were jubilant scenes as the three hundred pupils, parents and members of the wider school community celebrated Grosvenor’s historic victory in style. Congratulations are extended to the School’s fantastic squad of players, who have given their all throughout the season, as well as its team of coches - Head Coach Mr Johnston, as well Assistant Coaches Mr Winters and Mr Thompson - without whose tiresome effort and energy, the win would not have been possible.
